Bloom
lighting design
Bloom is a nature-inspired table lamp symbolizing growth and creativity. Designed and constructed using sintra (PVC foam), the design utilizes clean, organic forms with a pair of lamps in contrasting colors.
Project Overview
As a pair of table lamps inspired by nature and flora, Bloom captures the significance of growth as one of my first projects in the design program at the University of Alberta. The assignment was to design and construct two lamps out of sintra, a PVC material with a low gloss finish. The final lamps were to be identical in construction but be built in two separate colors.
Design Process
A mood board helped to establish the direction for my lamp design. I wanted to create a lamp that referenced the organic and natural world, with a form focused on geometry and pattern. Early sketches explored a variety of possible directions, before settling on the flora form of Bloom. A foam prototype helped establish size, technique, and measurements before proceeding to the workshop to work with the sintra. The final design of Bloom is a piece that complements the elegance of the natural world.
