CF-01

CF-01 draws directly from automotive design, in both structure and material language. Its steel tube frame echoes the geometry of roll cages and chassis components, while the carbon fiber seat and backrest recontextualize a material typically reserved for high-speed performance. By using carbon fiber in a furniture setting, the design challenges expectations.

project overview.

CF-01 is a sculptural chair design that explores the intersection of industrial structure and high-performance materiality. Influenced by automotive design, its steel tube frame draws from roll cage geometry, while the carbon fiber seat and backrest bring a lightweight, precision-focused element into the world of furniture. This project allowed me to reinterpret materials typically reserved for speed and function into a refined, static form. CF-01 balances raw structure with minimalist intent, creating a tension between strength and elegance.

design process.

The design process for CF-01 began with hand sketches that explored the relationship between structure and surface to capture the visual language of automotive frames within a clean, functional form. From there, I developed a CAD model to refine proportions, angles, and connection points, ensuring the frame would feel both stable and visually dynamic.

With the final design locked in, I moved into fabrication by cold-bending steel tubing, carefully shaping each curve to match the digital model while maintaining structural integrity. I learned how to weld during this project, and welded the tubes together. The seat and backrest were then hand-laid using carbon fiber, allowing for full control over the weave direction and finish. This process emphasized the dual nature of the chair — blending hands-on craftsmanship with precision-driven materials to bring the concept to life.
